Narasin Testing in Feed and Food

Chromatography-02

What Is Narasin?

Narasin is a polyether ionophore antibiotic used primarily as a coccidiostat in poultry production. Like other ionophores, it disrupts ion transport across the membranes of susceptible protozoa, particularly Eimeria species responsible for coccidiosis.
It is commonly incorporated into premixes and compound feed for broilers and is frequently used within rotation or shuttle programmes to reduce resistance pressure and maintain long-term efficacy of coccidiosis control strategies.

Use in Production Systems

In commercial poultry operations, narasin supports intestinal health and flock performance by limiting the impact of coccidial infection. Consistent inclusion at authorised levels is essential to maintain efficacy and avoid performance variability.
Because narasin is active at low concentrations, accurate formulation and homogeneous mixing during feed manufacture are critical. Even minor deviations from target levels may compromise effectiveness or increase safety risk.

Risks and Species Sensitivity

Although narasin is safe when used according to regulatory guidelines, improper handling during feed production can lead to significant issues.
Potential risks include:
‣ Over-inclusion during formulation
‣ Cross-contamination between medicated and non-medicated feed
‣ Inadequate line flushing between batches
‣ Accidental exposure of non-target species
As with other ionophores, horses are particularly sensitive to narasin, and exposure can result in severe toxicity. Strict production controls and verification procedures are therefore necessary in facilities manufacturing feed for multiple species.
Regulatory oversight governs authorised inclusion rates and, where applicable, residue considerations to ensure consumer safety.

The Role of Analytical Testing

Analytical verification provides objective confirmation that narasin has been incorporated at the correct concentration and that carry-over into subsequent batches remains within acceptable limits.
Testing is typically used to:
‣ Confirm declared concentrations in medicated feed
‣ Verify compliance in non-target feed
‣ Monitor cross-contamination risks
‣ Support internal quality assurance programmes
Modern LC-MS/MS methods allow sensitive quantification of narasin across premix and compound feed matrices, enabling reliable compliance assessment.

Managing Narasin Within Feed Systems

Effective management depends on accurate premix formulation, validated production procedures and representative sampling. Analytical testing strengthens these controls by providing measurable evidence that manufacturing systems are functioning as intended.
Given its role in structured coccidiosis control programmes, routine monitoring of narasin supports both regulatory compliance and production consistency in poultry feed manufacture.
