Macrolide Antibiotics in Feed

Soya-Quality-Testing

What Are Macrolide Antibiotics?

Macrolides are a class of antibiotics used in veterinary medicine to treat bacterial infections, particularly those affecting the respiratory and digestive systems of livestock. These compounds act by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, preventing the growth and multiplication of susceptible organisms.
In animal production systems, macrolide antibiotics may be administered through medicated feed or drinking water to allow treatment of groups of animals under veterinary supervision.
Tylosin is one of the most commonly used macrolide antibiotics in livestock production and is frequently monitored in feed and premix formulations.

Occurrence in Feed Production

Macrolide antibiotics such as tylosin are typically incorporated into medicated premixes which are blended into compound feed during manufacturing. This approach allows controlled dosing during veterinary treatment programmes and supports the management of bacterial diseases in intensive production systems.
Because feed mills may manufacture both medicated and non-medicated feed using the same production equipment, strict production controls are required to minimise the risk of cross-contamination between batches. Monitoring programmes may therefore include testing of both medicated feed and feed intended to be free from antibiotics.

Regulatory & Compliance Considerations

The use of macrolide antibiotics in livestock production is subject to regulatory oversight in many countries. Regulations commonly define authorised compounds, approved species and permitted inclusion levels in feed.
Veterinary supervision is typically required for the use of these medicines, and withdrawal periods may apply before animals enter the food chain. These measures are designed to ensure that residues in meat, milk or eggs remain within established safety limits.

The Role of Analytical Testing

Analytical testing provides confirmation that macrolide antibiotics in feed are present at the intended concentrations and that non-medicated feed remains free from unintended contamination.
Modern LC-MS/MS methods enable reliable detection and quantification of compounds such as tylosin in feed matrices. Routine laboratory monitoring supports quality assurance programmes in feed manufacturing and helps demonstrate compliance with veterinary and regulatory requirements.
