Pleuromutilin Antibiotics in Feed

Soya-Quality-Testing

What Are Pleuromutilin Antibiotics?

Pleuromutilins are a class of veterinary antibiotics used primarily to treat bacterial infections in swine and poultry. These compounds act by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, preventing the growth and multiplication of susceptible organisms.
One of the most widely used compounds in this group is tiamulin, which is commonly used in veterinary treatment programmes targeting respiratory and intestinal infections in livestock.

Occurrence in Feed Production

Pleuromutilin antibiotics such as tiamulin may be administered through medicated feed when group treatment is required. In these cases, the antibiotic is incorporated into premixes that are blended into compound feed during manufacturing.
Because feed mills frequently produce both medicated and non-medicated feed on shared equipment, strict production management is necessary to prevent unintended carry-over between batches. Residual material remaining in mixers, conveyors or storage bins may introduce trace levels of antibiotics into subsequent feed products.
Monitoring programmes therefore often include testing of both medicated and non-medicated feeds.

Regulatory & Compliance Considerations

The use of pleuromutilin antibiotics in livestock production is regulated in many jurisdictions to ensure responsible veterinary use and to protect food safety.
Regulatory frameworks may define:
‣ authorised compounds and veterinary uses
‣ permitted inclusion levels in feed
‣ approved animal species and treatment conditions
‣ withdrawal periods before animals enter the food chain
These controls help ensure that residues in meat and other animal-derived products remain within established safety limits.

The Role of Analytical Testing

Analytical testing provides confirmation that pleuromutilin antibiotics in feed are present at appropriate concentrations and that non-medicated feed remains free from unintended contamination.
Modern LC-MS/MS methods allow reliable detection and quantification of compounds such as tiamulin in feed matrices. Routine laboratory monitoring supports feed quality assurance programmes and helps demonstrate compliance with veterinary and regulatory requirements.
