Quinoxaline Antibiotics in Feed

Soya-Quality-Testing

What Are Quinoxaline Antibiotics?

Quinoxalines are a class of veterinary antimicrobial compounds historically used in livestock production to control bacterial infections and support growth performance in certain animal species. These compounds act by interfering with bacterial DNA synthesis, inhibiting the replication of susceptible microorganisms.
One of the most recognised compounds in this group is olaquindox, which has been used in swine production systems as a feed additive under controlled veterinary and regulatory conditions.

Occurrence in Feed Production

Quinoxaline compounds such as olaquindox may be incorporated into feed through medicated premixes that are blended into compound feed during manufacturing. This approach allows consistent dosing across groups of animals during veterinary treatment programmes.
Because feed mills often produce multiple feed types on shared equipment, strict production management is required to minimise the risk of cross-contamination between medicated and non-medicated products. Even small amounts of residual medicated feed in mixers, conveyors or storage systems may introduce trace levels of veterinary compounds into subsequent batches.
Monitoring programmes may therefore include testing of both medicated feed and feed intended to be free from veterinary medicines.

Regulatory & Compliance Considerations

The use of quinoxaline antibiotics is subject to regulatory control in many regions. In some jurisdictions the use of compounds such as olaquindox has been restricted or prohibited due to food safety concerns.
As a result, analytical monitoring may be required to verify compliance with regulatory requirements or to detect unauthorised use in feed products.

The Role of Analytical Testing

Laboratory analysis provides reliable confirmation of the presence or absence of quinoxaline compounds in feed. Sensitive analytical methods are required because these compounds may occur at low concentrations, particularly when monitoring for cross-contamination or regulatory compliance.
Modern LC-MS/MS techniques enable accurate detection of olaquindox and related compounds in feed matrices. Analytical testing therefore supports regulatory monitoring, feed safety verification and quality assurance programmes within feed manufacturing systems.
