Sulphonamide Antibiotics in Feed

Soya-Quality-Testing

What Are Sulphonamide Antibiotics?

Sulphonamides are a class of antimicrobial compounds used in veterinary medicine to treat bacterial and certain protozoal infections in livestock and poultry. These antibiotics act by inhibiting folic acid synthesis in bacteria, preventing microbial growth and allowing the animal’s immune system to eliminate the infection.
In animal production systems, sulphonamides may be administered through medicated feed or drinking water where group treatment is required. Their broad activity has made them a long-standing component of veterinary treatment programmes.
Common sulphonamides monitored in feed include sulphadimidine and sulphadiazine.

Occurrence in Feed Production

Sulphonamides may be incorporated into feed through medicated premixes that are blended into compound feed during manufacturing. This allows controlled administration across flocks or herds where veterinary treatment is necessary.
Because feed mills frequently produce both medicated and non-medicated feed using the same production lines, the risk of carry-over between batches must be carefully managed. Residual material within mixers, conveyors or storage systems may introduce trace amounts of antibiotics into subsequent feed products.
Monitoring programmes therefore often include testing of both medicated feed and feed intended to be antibiotic-free.

Regulatory & Compliance Considerations

The use of sulphonamide antibiotics in livestock production is regulated in many jurisdictions to ensure responsible veterinary use and to protect the food supply.
Regulatory frameworks typically define:
‣ approved compounds and veterinary uses
‣ permitted inclusion levels in feed
‣ authorised species and treatment conditions
‣ withdrawal periods before slaughter or product collection
These controls are intended to minimise the risk of residues in meat, milk or eggs entering the human food chain.

The Role of Analytical Testing

Laboratory analysis provides confirmation that sulphonamide concentrations in feed are consistent with formulation specifications and regulatory requirements.
Modern LC-MS/MS methods enable sensitive detection of multiple sulphonamide compounds in feed matrices. Analytical testing can therefore be used to monitor:
‣ sulphadimidine
‣ sulphadiazine
Routine testing helps verify correct formulation of medicated feed while also confirming that non-medicated products remain free from unintended antibiotic contamination.
