Tetracycline Antibiotics in Feed

Soya-Quality-Testing

What Are Tetracycline Antibiotics?

Tetracyclines are a widely used class of broad-spectrum antibiotics employed in veterinary medicine to control bacterial infections in livestock and poultry. These compounds act by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, preventing the growth and replication of susceptible microorganisms.
In animal production systems, tetracyclines may be administered through medicated feed to allow treatment of groups of animals. Their broad antimicrobial activity makes them effective against a range of bacterial pathogens affecting poultry, swine and other livestock species.
Common tetracycline antibiotics monitored in feed include chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and doxycycline.

Occurrence in Feed Production

Tetracyclines are typically incorporated into medicated premixes that are subsequently blended into compound feed. This allows controlled dosing during veterinary treatment programmes.
Because feed mills often manufacture both medicated and non-medicated feeds on the same equipment, careful production management is required to prevent unintended carry-over between batches. Even small amounts of residual medicated feed in production lines may introduce trace levels of antibiotics into subsequent products.
For this reason, monitoring programmes often include both medicated and non-medicated feeds.

Regulatory & Compliance Considerations

The use of tetracycline antibiotics in livestock production is subject to veterinary and regulatory oversight in many countries. Regulations typically define:
‣ authorised compounds
‣ permitted inclusion levels
‣ approved animal species
‣ required withdrawal periods before slaughter or product collection
These controls are intended to protect animal health while ensuring that residues in edible tissues remain within established safety limits.

The Role of Analytical Testing

Laboratory testing provides objective confirmation that tetracycline antibiotics are present at appropriate concentrations in medicated feed and that non-medicated feed remains free from unintended contamination.
Modern LC-MS/MS methods allow sensitive detection and quantification of multiple tetracycline compounds within a single analysis. This enables reliable monitoring of:
‣ chlortetracycline (CTC)
‣ oxytetracycline (OTC)
‣ doxycycline
Routine testing supports quality assurance programmes in feed manufacturing and helps demonstrate compliance with veterinary and regulatory requirements.
