Nicarbazin Testing in Feed and Food

Chromatography-02

What Is Nicarbazin?

Nicarbazin is a synthetic (non-ionophore) coccidiostat widely used in poultry production to control coccidiosis caused by Eimeria species. Unlike ionophores, nicarbazin does not disrupt ion transport but interferes with parasite development through a different biochemical mechanism.
It is commonly incorporated into broiler feeds, either alone or in shuttle programmes alongside ionophores, to improve coccidial control and reduce resistance pressure.

Use in Production Systems

Nicarbazin is particularly valued for its efficacy in broilers during early production stages. Its inclusion levels are tightly regulated and must be carefully controlled during feed manufacture.
Because it is often used in structured shuttle programmes, sequencing and production control within feed mills are important to prevent unintended carry-over into withdrawal feed or layer diets.

Risks and Compliance Considerations

While effective, nicarbazin requires careful management due to both animal performance considerations and regulatory oversight.
Key areas of concern include:
‣ Over-inclusion during batching
‣ Cross-contamination between feed types
‣ Carry-over into non-target or withdrawal feed
‣ Residue compliance in edible tissues
In laying hens, unintended exposure may affect egg production and quality. Regulatory authorities, therefore, establish authorised inclusion rates and residue limits where applicable.

The Role of Analytical Testing

Analytical verification confirms that nicarbazin concentrations meet authorised specifications and that cross-contamination remains within acceptable limits.
Testing supports:
‣ Compliance with label claims
‣ Verification of non-target feed safety
‣ Monitoring of production sequencing
‣ Residue risk management
Modern LC-MS/MS methods allow sensitive and specific quantification of nicarbazin in premix and compound feed matrices.
