Maduramicin Testing in Feed and Food

Chromatography-02

What Is Maduramicin?

Maduramicin is a polyether ionophore antibiotic used primarily as a coccidiostat in poultry production. It acts by disrupting ion transport across the cell membranes of Eimeria species, thereby inhibiting parasite development within the intestinal tract.
Compared to some other ionophores, maduramicin is highly potent and is incorporated into feed at very low inclusion rates. Its efficacy makes it a valuable component of structured coccidiosis control programmes in broiler production.

Use in Production Systems

Maduramicin is predominantly used in broiler feeds to maintain intestinal health and support consistent growth performance. Because it is active at low concentrations, precise formulation and homogeneous mixing are critical during feed manufacture.
Its use is strictly regulated, with authorised inclusion rates defined according to species and production stage. Maintaining these levels is essential to ensure both efficacy and safety.

Risks and Species Sensitivity

As with other ionophores, maduramicin has a defined safety margin and requires careful control during production.
Potential risks include:
‣ Over-inclusion during feed formulation
‣ Cross-contamination between medicated and non-medicated feed
‣ Inadequate flushing of shared production equipment
‣ Accidental exposure of non-target species
Due to its potency, even small formulation errors may result in adverse effects. Horses are particularly sensitive to ionophores, including maduramicin, and accidental exposure can lead to severe toxicity. Strict segregation and verification procedures are therefore essential in multi-species feed manufacturing environments.
Regulatory frameworks govern authorised inclusion levels and compliance expectations to protect both animal and consumer safety.

The Role of Analytical Testing

Because maduramicin is used at low concentrations, analytical verification is critical to confirm accurate dosing and to detect unintended carry-over between production batches.
Testing supports:
‣ Confirmation of declared concentrations in medicated feed
‣ Verification of compliance in non-target feed
‣ Monitoring of cross-contamination risk
‣ Investigation of suspected formulation deviations
Modern LC-MS/MS methods enable sensitive and specific quantification of maduramicin across premix and compound feed matrices, providing reliable compliance data.

Managing Maduramicin Within Feed Systems

Effective control relies on accurate premix preparation, validated dosing systems and carefully managed production sequencing. Representative sampling and routine analytical testing provide objective evidence that these controls remain effective.
Given its potency and species sensitivity considerations, structured monitoring is essential to maintain feed safety and regulatory compliance.
